Does my child need play therapy?
Throughout their lives most children go through difficult times such as friendship difficulties, parental separation or adjusting to a new school. Some children may need more support than others to cope at these difficult times and play therapy is the most appropriate and child centred form of support. If you or other adults ae worried about your child’s behaviour or emotional well-being play therapy can help.
How many sessions will my child need?
A minimum of 12 sessions are required to give children enough time to process their conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings and for therapeutic change to be seen. Some children will require more than 12 sessions and regular reviews will be held with parents to discuss progress.
How often do you meet with parents and carers?
I meet with parents and carers before play therapy starts. At this initial meeting I will ask some questions to enable me to build a full picture of the child, their strengths, difficulties and interests and how I can best support them. A review meeting with parents and carers will take place after 7 sessions to discuss the child’s progress and decide if the number of sessions should be extended. An end meeting I will then take place when play therapy finishes and the information from this meeting will inform the child’s end report.
Do you work with children with additional needs?
Yes. I have experience of working with children with Autism, ADHD, PDA, attachment disorder and developmental delay. I am happy to discuss your child’s needs, and I aim to offer an inclusive therapeutic service.
What toys are in the playroom and why?
Please refer to the play therapy toolkit. Toys are carefully selected to facilitate emotional and creative expression and to encourage imaginative play.
How long is a play therapy session?
Sessions take place weekly and last for 40 minutes.
